Dhaka, March 31: The three-day long 9th meeting of UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC)'s Regional Committee for the Central Indian Ocean (IOCINDIO) concluded on Thursday, March 30. In the meeting, the chair of IOCINDIO member nation Myanmar was empty. However, before the beginning of the meeting, the country confirmed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that it would depute a delegation to Dhaka.

Diplomatic sources say that Naypyidaw was invited by Dhaka to attend the IOCINDIO meeting. The country accepted Dhaka's invitation. Myanmar also sent a list of three delegations to attend the meeting. Not only that, the delegation's flight plan was sent to the Ministry of External Affairs. That's why the seat reserved for Myanmar was also reserved in the meeting.

Apart from Myanmar, three other member nations of IOCINDIO, United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia and Oman also did not send any delegation to the meeting. When asked why Myanmar did not attend the meeting despite sending the delegation list and flight plan, Chairman of the meeting, Foreign Secretary (Maritime Affairs Unit) Rear Admiral (retd.) Md. Khurshed Alam said, “We invited Myanmar. There is only one reason for their non-come, perhaps there are no marine scientific people. We don't have either. What will they do by participating here? There is no use in sending ordinary people."

However, Khurshed Alam feels that it would be beneficial for Bangladesh if the Myanmar delegation joined the meeting. The Secretary of Maritime Affairs said that the reason for the non-attendance of the remaining three members, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia and Oman, was that the countries had other commitments. So they could not come.

Last year, Bangladesh was elected the chair of the Regional Committee for the Central Indian Ocean of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO. Foreign Secretary (Maritime Affairs Unit) Rear Admiral (retd.) Md. Khurshed Alam became the chair of IOCINDIO through election. Khurshed Alam has been elected as the chair this time too.

In this context, Khurshed Alam said, we have been elected as the chair of IOCINDIO for two consecutive times. I was elected chair through the last election. Elections have been held this year as well. No one else stood this time. So we got re-elected.
