Noted economist Khondkar Ibrahim Khaled dies

Dhaka, February 24: Prominent economist and former deputy governor of Bangladesh Bank Khondkar Ibrahim Khaled has passed away (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilahi Raziun). He died at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) on Wednesday morning. He was 80 years old.

Public Relations Officer of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Prashanto Majumder confirmed the matter.

He said Ibrahim Khaled was admitted to BSMMU in a dying condition. After that his condition was somewhat better. However, his physical condition deteriorated after he had a stroke on Friday.

Khaled was admitted to the Bangladesh Specialized Hospital in the capital's Shyamoli on February 1 after being infected with the coronavirus. From there he was transferred to BSMMU.

Apart from being the Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank, Ibrahim Khaled has also served as the Chairman and Managing Director of Bangladesh Krishi Bank and Managing Director of Sonali, Agrani and Pubali Banks.

Khandaker Ibrahim Khaled was born in 1941 in Gopalganj. He obtained his master's degree in geography from Dhaka University and his MBA degree from IBA and joined the banking profession in 1963.

His first janaza was held at 11 a.m. at Kachikancha Bhaban in the capital's Segunbagicha. Then the second janaza was held at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque and the third janaza was held at the National Press Club. He will be buried at the family cemetery in Gopalganj.

Meanwhile, the former deputy governor of Bangladesh Bank and prominent economist Khandaker Ibrahim Khaled has expressed deep grief over the death of the President. Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

In a condolence message on Wednesday, the President said the people of Bangladesh will always remember the talent and skills left by Khondkar Ibrahim Khaled for the smooth development of the banking sector. At this time, the President prayed for the forgiveness of the soul of the deceased and conveyed deep sympathy to his bereaved family.

In a separate condolence message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina conveyed her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members. She said the contribution of Khondkar Ibrahim Khaled in the development of the country's banking sector will be memorable.
