Noted physician and Language Movement hero Dr Mirza Mazharul Islam succumbs to Covid-19

Dhaka, October 12: Veteran physician and a Language Movement hero, Dr. Mirza Mazharul Islam, died of Covid-19 on Sunday (October 11). He was 93 years old.

He died at Dhaka's Birdem Hospital. He was suffering from geriatric disease.

Earlier, on September 30, the veteran physician and language activist was admitted to the ICU in Birdem.

He was Honorary Chief Consultant in the Department of Surgery at Birdem Hospital until his death.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina condoled the death of the doctor.

In a condolence message on Sunday, the Prime Minister respectfully acknowledged his contribution to the language movement.

The Prime Minister conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.

Veteran Professor Dr. Mirza Mazharul Islam passed MBBS from Dhaka Medical College in 1952.

This eminent physician took charge as the Principal of Dhaka Medical College in 1985.

He received the Ekushey Padak in 2018 for his contribution to the language movement. He was buried at Mirpur Shaheed Buddhijibi Cemetery in the capital.

Mirza Mazharul Islam actively participated in the language movement.

He was a member of the first Rashtrabhasha Sangram Parishad formed on 30 September 1947 at Dhaka Medical College.

On February 21, 1952, he treated a number of language workers who had been injured in a police raid on students.

He joined the public meeting of Amtala. Also worth mentioning was his active participation in the great liberation war and his role as a physician next to the wounded.

State Minister for Culture KM Khalid expressed deep grief and sorrow over his death.

In a condolence message on Sunday, the state minister conveyed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family.

He said that he has also made special contribution in the planning and construction of the first Shaheed Minar.

The nation will forever be grateful to this language activist for his outstanding contribution to the language movement and the war of liberation, the minister said.
