Official journey of Dhaka-Jalpaiguri Mitali Express starts

Dhaka, June 1: The third India-Bangladesh train service 'Mitali Express' was officially launched between New Jalpaiguri in India and Dhaka Cantonment Station in Bangladesh on Wednesday.

Bangladesh Railway Minister Nurul Islam Sujon and Indian Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw jointly inaugurated the virtual 'Mitali Express' service from the Indian Railways Ministry headquarters in Delhi.

Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Muhammad Imran and senior officials of the Railway Ministries of both the countries were present on the occasion.

According to sources, the 513 km journey between New Jalpaiguri and Dhaka Cantonment will take nine hours. The train will be powered by a diesel engine and will have 4 air-conditioned cabin coaches and 4 air-conditioned chair coaches.

On the return journey, Dhaka Cantonment-New Jalpaiguri Mitali Express will leave Dhaka Cantonment at 21:50 Bangladesh time twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays.

The other two Indo-Bangladesh passenger trains, Maitri Express and Bondhan Express, were disrupted due to Covid-19 restrictions. The two trains started running on May 29. The Maitri Express was launched between the two countries in 2008 after the partition of British India in 1947, the same year the Bondhan Express was launched.
