Dhaka, January 6: Globe Biotech Limited of Bangladesh has received permission to produce coronavirus vaccine for experimental application. Dr. Asif Mahmood, research and development in-charge of Globe Biotech Limited, said that they were given the permission on December 28.

"We have received the license to produce the vaccine for clinical trials," he said. "We will now submit the protocol to the Bangladesh Medical Research Council (BMRC) for clinical trial next week. Then the trial will start. It will be possible to start the 'clinical trial' of Globe vaccine 'Bongovax by this January."

Hundreds of companies from around the world are trying to make a vaccine against the Covid-19 disease, with Globe Biotech being the only Bangladeshi company in the running. Initially, the name of the vaccine was 'Bancovid' but in December it was changed to 'Bongovax'.

The World Health Organization is monitoring the vaccines being developed around the world. The World Health Organization has a list of 42 vaccines at the clinical trial stage and another list of 156 vaccines at the pre-clinical trial stage (pre-clinical trial). Globe Biotech's vaccine has been included in that list.

At a press conference held at Globe Pharmaceuticals' head office in Tejgaon on July 3 last year, Globe Biotech announced its efforts to develop a coronavirus vaccine. The company later told a news conference on October 10 that the vaccine had been "effective and completely safe" in rats.

Globe Biotech later canceled a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ICDDR,B for the trial application of the vaccine.
