Oil tanker in sea burnt to ashes

Dhaka, May 27: A boat carrying oil drums was burnt to ashes in the sea at Patenga in Chittagong. The incident took place on Friday (May 26) around 11:30 pm. The local people saw the fire burning in the boat from the shore of the sea. Two people were burnt in this incident. They have been taken to hospital.

Absar Uddin, senior officer of Chittagong EPZ Fire Station, said around 1:30 am, "There was a fire in a boat loaded with an oil drum in the sea at Patenga. Two units of Karnaphuli and EPZ Fire Service are ready to douse the fire. However, there is no fire service boat to extinguish the fire. Due to this we have not been able to approach the burning vessel till now. However, we are in constant communication with the Coast Guard on the matter."

EPZ Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Karim said that three workers from the boat that caught fire came ashore in another boat. They said there were five persons in that boat. Two others were taken to the hospital due to burns.

Chittagong Port Secretary Omar Farooq told the media that around 12:30 pm, the fire was reported by radio from the lighter ship MV Muhuri-2, which was stationed in the Alpha Anchor area in the port waters.

He said that immediately the port tugboat Kandari-8 used for fire fighting was sent to the spot. Besides, the Navy and Coast Guard were informed about the matter. Two units of Karnaphuli and EPZ fire service went to the spot after receiving the information about the fire.
