Dhaka, 2 July 2023: One in seven people in Bangladesh could be displaced by the year 2050 due to the adverse effects of climate change. At the same time, many low-lying areas will face serious damage due to the rise in sea level.

For this reason, quick steps should be taken to implement the Paris Agreement.

United Nations Deputy Secretary Amina J said these things at a seminar in the capital on Saturday night. Mohammed. The seminar titled 'Road to Sustainable Development Goals Summit-2023' was held at the Foreign Service Academy at Bailey Road in the capital.

Climate and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) action are flip sides of the same coin, the UN Deputy Secretary said. Unfortunately, several SDG indicators, including climate, are pointing in the wrong direction. The human toll is mounting rapidly. Estimates so far show that by 2050, one in seven people in Bangladesh will be displaced due to adverse effects of climate. Many low-lying areas will also be severely affected by rising sea levels.

He warned that carbon emissions are increasing in the world. In this, the global average temperature is going to reach 1.5 degrees Celsius quickly. Therefore, the implementation of the Paris Agreement must be fast-tracked, so that the most vulnerable segments of the population can benefit.

According to the UN Deputy Secretary, 80 percent of global carbon emissions come from the G20 countries. So they need to take more steps. In particular, they can help each other to reduce carbon emissions. Rich countries can also help each other to reduce the burden of suffering on those most affected by the climate crisis. He also said that the SDG conference which is going to be held next September is a juncture for all of us. For this reason, the international community must unite again in the implementation of the SDGs. Efforts to implement the plan should be redoubled.

The Deputy Secretary of the United Nations spoke about focusing more on energy transition, education, digital transformation, jobs and social protection to prevent the adverse effects of climate change and sustainable food systems. He said, Bangladesh is a good example in this regard. We can look to Bangladesh's work to harness digital innovation in monitoring and inspiring progress in food system transformation.
