Dhaka, February 1: Noting the need for a strong opposition party for democracy, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the opposition parties have failed to win the confidence of the people due to lack of efficient leadership.

The Prime Minister said, "Now that the opposition says that there are parties, they have not been able to gain the trust and confidence of the people because their leadership is not like that. But democracy must have a strong opposition. There is no doubt about it."

He was speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of a website named after Bangabandhu in the National Assembly on Sunday (January 31) and the release of a digital compilation of the Father of the Nation's speech.

The Prime Minister inaugurated the Mujibvarsha website 2020-21 and the digital compilation of audio speeches of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman organized by the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat.

Sheikh Hasina said, "Parliament has a role to play in maintaining the democratic trend in our country. Because parliament is a place where people's representatives come and people get a chance to speak. '

Expressing gratitude to the people for repeatedly electing her, Sheikh Hasina said, "We want the democratic trend to continue in the country and we have the opportunity to work for the nation."

Referring to her own experience and that of the party (Awami League), the Prime Minister said, "We do not create such problems anymore."

The Prime Minister further said, "Bangladesh Awami League was formed by the Father of the Nation and when he was elected General Secretary of this party, he left the ministry to organize the party."

He said, ‘Bangabandhu had a long cherished dream, one day to give independence to Bengalis as a nation and make it an independent state. He did it. But the misfortune of the nation is that he was killed along with his family. '

Hasina said, "The present government and the Awami League are working with the aim of making the Bengalis smile by completing the unfinished work of the father of the nation through economic liberation."

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury and Member of Parliament Nabil Ahmed also addressed the function. Chief Whip Nur-e-Alam Chowdhury Liton was present on the stage at the time.
