Outgoing IGP meets President

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, Sept 30: Bangladesh Police's Inspector General (IGP) Dr. Benazir Ahmed had a farewell meeting with President Md. Abdul Hamid.

During a meeting at Bangabhaban on Thursday (September 29) evening, the outgoing IGP expressed his gratitude to the President for his guidance and overall support in the discharge of his duties. Meanwhile, the President also thanked the outgoing police chief for successfully fulfilling his duties.

Secretary of the President's Office, Sahad Barua, Military Secretary Major General SM Salah Uddin Islam, Press Secretary Md. Zainal Abedin and Secretary (Joint) Md. Wahidul Islam Khan were present during the meeting.

According to Section 43(1)(a) of the Public Service Act, 2018 (Act No. 57 of 2018), IGP Dr. Benazir Ahmed is retiring on September 30 as he has attained the age of 59 years.

As per rules, he will be entitled to one year's retirement and post-retirement leave (PRL) benefits from October 1, 2022 to September 30, 2023, including lampe grand equivalent to 18 months' basic pay.

Dr. Benazir Ahmed was born on October 1, 1963 in a noble Muslim family in Gopalganj. He obtained MA and LLB degrees in English Literature from Dhaka University. Dr. Benazir Ahmed studied at Asia Pacific Center for Security Studies in the USA, Canberra Charles Strutt University in Australia, and World Bank Regional Training Center in Singapore. In 2019, he obtained his doctorate degree from Dhaka University.

On January 31, 2018, the Bangladesh government appointed Benazir Ahmed as the country's 30th police chief. Since then, due to his various steps, the common people have been getting 'people-oriented police service'. He also gives bold and timely instructions one after another to take the police out of the police station and reach people's doorsteps.

The police are carrying out various activities including keeping the law and order situation normal, providing services alongside the people to combat the coronavirus pandemic, and regular operations to eliminate terrorists and drugs.
