Dhaka, August 6: The pressure of people to return to work in the capital ignoring the ongoing lockdown continues at Shimulia-Banglabazar Ghat. Thousands of vehicles carrying these people are waiting to cross the Shimulia-Banglabazar ghat. More than 600 private vehicles and freight trucks, have been waiting to cross Shimulia Ghat since Friday (August 6) morning.

Md. Shafiqul Islam, Co-General Manager, Shimulia Ghat, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) confirmed the information.

Md. Shafiqul Islam said that the vehicles with hundreds of passengers have been waiting at the Shimulia-Banglabazar route since morning. The ferry is under pressure from both directions. The number of people returning to work is more than the number of people returning home. On the other hand, they have to travel by ferry as the launch is closed. Hygiene and social distance are still neglected due to passenger pressure and congestion on the ferry.

Mawa Naval Police Inspector (TI Administration) Mohammad Zakir Hossain said a total of one thousand vehicles including freight trucks and more than 600 trucks and 400 small and large vehicles are waiting for the ferry crossing on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway. In addition, there are currently 10 ferries operating on the route, both large and small.

Md. Sirajul Kabir, in-charge of Mawa Naufari, said that it is taking more time for the ferry to run on the route due to the strong current in the Padma. So the vehicles at the wharf are made to wait longer.
