Own Correspondent, Dhaka, June 13: Members of parliament have opposed the opportunity given in the national budget to bring back money, which had been laundered abroad.

They also commented that giving the opportunity to bring back the money smuggled abroad is a kind of corruption. Some members have also demanded legal action against those who have laundered and smuggled money abroad.

This was stated by some members of the government and opposition parties while participating in the general discussion on the proposed budget in the National Assembly on Sunday (June 12).

Dr. Pran Gopal Dutta, a member of the ruling party, said it was a form of corruption to allow money smuggled abroad to be returned. Those who smuggle money abroad are not good people. So once this opportunity is given, money will be laundered abroad year after year and unscrupulous businessmen and people will whitewash it with low tax.

Opposition Jatiya Party MP Pir Fazlur Rahman slammed the government's move to recover money laundered abroad in the proposed budget.

He said if there is an opportunity in the budget for impunity of money launderers, then these money thieves will become the best taxpayers. The impunity that the Finance Minister is bringing in the budget, the money smuggled abroad will actually be given impunity in the country. I do not support it. Legal action should be taken against those who have laundered money, those who have embezzled money illegally and smuggled abroad. If not, there is no need for money laundering law in Bangladesh.

Jatiya Party Barrister Shamim Haider Patwari vehemently opposed the imposition of impunity for bringing money smuggled into the country, saying that some people rob banks and smuggle money abroad through corruption. No legal action will be taken against them? There are specific allegations and criminal cases against some. They will not be able to enjoy this benefit.

Mokabbir Khan of Gana Forum said that if the highest punishment could be ensured by arresting a big corrupt person in the country, then corruption in the country would have been reduced by 50 percent in one day. I am challenging you to give exemplary punishment to the big corrupt people. If 50 percent corruption is not reduced in the country, I will resign from the Parliament.
