Parliament mourns Sitakunda incident, wishes recovery to injured

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, June 6: The National Assembly has expressed its condolences in memory of those killed and injured in the container blast at Sitakunda.

Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury moved a condolence motion at the beginning of the 18th session of the National Assembly on Sunday (June 5).

She said the great national parliament is deeply saddened by the memory of those killed and injured in the container blast at Sitakunda in Chittagong last night, and it is expressing deep grief and sympathy to the families of the victims. At the same time, the great parliament is wishing speedy recovery to the injured.

At the beginning of the session, the Speaker first nominates the Presidium. The members of the presidium in this session are Shasmul Haque Tuku, AB Tajul Islam, Muhibur Rahman Manik, Mujibul Haque Chunnu and Shamima Akter Khanam. In the absence of the Speaker-Deputy Speaker, one of them will preside over the session.

After the nomination of the Presidium, the Speaker moved a motion of condolence. The parliament mourned over the deaths of UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, former Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, former Member of Parliament Jubed Ali, former Minister of State for Water Resources Gautam Chakraborty, BM Nazrul Islam, Shah Zikrul Ahmed, Khandaker Abdul Jalil, Ashika Akbar, Parveen Sultana.

Besides Ekushey song composer columnist Abdul Gaffar Chowdhury, former Additional IG of Bangladesh Police AKM Samsuddin, reciter Hasan Arif, former president of Kishoreganj District Bar Shah Azizul Haque, eminent journalist Mostafa Kamal Pasha from Chittagong, heroic freedom fighter Mojibur Rahman Dulu and Mozammel Haque from Pirganj in Rangpur, Prominent businessman Kazi Ekram Ullah, former cricketer Mosharraf Hossain Rubel, popular Bollywood singer Krishnakumar Kunnath's deaths were also mourned.

It also mourned for the victims of a Texas primary school shooting in the United States, victims of the Nepal Tara Air plane crash, and the victims of accidents took place at various locations around the country and abroad. A minute of silence was observed and prayers were offered after the presentation of condolence.

The budget session of the previous two years was short due to the pandemic. After raising the budget, the MPs will discuss and pass the supplementary budget and the budget for the new financial year. Although the hygiene rules were followed in this session, the strictures were seen to be a bit less.
