Own Correspondent, Dhaka, 30 November 2023: Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said that the party leaders can stand as independent candidates in the upcoming 12th National Parliament elections if they want. Allowing independent candidates is a strategic decision of the party.

He said, "There may be mischievous attempts by some to question the election. Independent candidates are allowed only for strategic reasons of the party."

Bridges Minister said this at the ceremony of handing over the letters to the officially nominated candidates from Awami League President Sheikh Hasina's political office in Dhanmondi on Wednesday.

He said, "The president of our nomination board, Sheikh Hasina, gave a speech to the candidates at the Ganobhaban on Sunday. There is nothing impure or unclear. Everything has been openly stated. Everything has been clarified. Those who want to be candidates according to her guidelines are talking about dummy candidates. said. So I don't know that there is any obstacle to be a candidate by following these guidelines. The president himself has given the guidelines."

Regarding the nominees, the Minister of Road Transport said that only those who can win have been nominated.

He said, "The government is trying to conduct peaceful elections. The opposition party is disrupting the environment. The government party is not doing any violence. Does the election become valid if a special party participates? Does it become a participatory election if they come? 25-30 parties are participating in this election. Even though BNP is not participating, some of their party leaders are preparing for the election."

Pointing out that BNP is trying to avoid voting because it cannot win the election, Quader said, "It will be clear who will come from BNP by November 30."

Regarding the non-announcement of candidates for the two constituencies, he said, "Awami League has not given candidates for the two constituencies due to party strategy. The decision will be taken after looking at the benefits of the electoral alliance. There is a matter of adjustment-accommodation here. The party will finalize them."
