Photojournalist Aftab Ahmed's murder accused arrested after nine years

Dhaka, January 26: The Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) of the police has arrested the accused Raju Munsi, who was sentenced to death in the Ekushey Padak awardee veteran photojournalist Aftab Ahmed murder case. Nine years after the murder, he was arrested from a border area of the country on Wednesday evening.

Superintendent of Police (Media) of ATU. Aslam Khan said, the arrest of accused Raju Munsi, who was sentenced to death in the case of the murder of veteran photojournalist Aftab Ahmed, will be informed in a press conference at Baridhara ATU office on Thursday afternoon.

On December 25, 2013, the police recovered the body of journalist Aftab Ahmed from his home in Rampura. On March 28, 2017, Judge Abdur Rahman Sardar of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 sentenced five people to death and one to seven years in prison in the case filed in this incident.

The five persons sentenced to death are - Billal Hossain Kislu, Habib Howladar, Raju Munsi, Russell and driver Humayun Kabir Mollah. Sabuj Khan, another accused, was sentenced to seven years in prison and fined Tk 10,000.

Journalist Aftab Ahmed was a photojournalist of Daily Ittefaq. He took many rare photographs of Bangladesh's independence war and its aftermath. He was awarded the Ekushey Padak in 2006 for his unique contribution to photojournalism.
