PM calls for strong commitment of international organizations for dignified repatriation of Rohingyas

Dhaka, May 29: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina called for a firm commitment from international organizations including the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to ensure the safe and dignified repatriation of Rohingyas.

She said, "To ensure the safe and dignified repatriation of the Rohingyas, international organizations including the OIC need a firm commitment."

The Prime Minister made this comment during a courtesy call on OIC Secretary General Hissain Brahim at Ganabhaban on Sunday.

After the meeting, Prime Minister's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed the journalists. Sheikh Hasina sought firm commitment from the OIC member countries to send the Rohingyas home and help them solve their problems.

The Prime Minister said that they have given shelter to the Rohingyas on humanitarian grounds and called on the OIC member countries to collect funds for the Rohingyas.

She said, there is religious harmony in Bangladesh and people are living in peace.

The OIC Secretary General mentioned the Rohingya issue as a priority issue for the OIC and said, "Rohingyas are deprived of their rights." He said that Bangladesh is an important country for the OIC

OIC Secretary General said Bangladesh is playing an important role in OIC. He also recalled the great contribution of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in establishing international peace.

The OIC Secretary General congratulated the Prime Minister on the 50th anniversary of Bangabandhu receiving the Julio-Curie Peace Prize for his contribution to world peace.

Prime Minister's Ambassador Etlarj Mohammad Ziauddin, Principal Secretary to Prime Minister M. Tofajzel Hossain Mia and Secretary (Maritime Affairs Unit) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Rear Admiral (retd) Md. Khurshed Alam were present in the meeting. OIC Assistant Secretary General Ambassador Askar Musinov was also present.

OIC Secretary General Hisen Brahim Taha arrived in Dhaka on Saturday on a five-day visit.

As Chancellor of Islamic University of Technology (IUT), OIC Secretary General will attend the 35th Convocation of IUT on May 30.
