Own Correspondent, Dhaka, Nov 11: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has urged the European Union (EU) to take steps to stop the Russia-Ukraine war.

She said that the whole world is suffering due to this war. She made this call when a five-member delegation led by European Union Commission for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson came to meet the Prime Minister at her office.

After the meeting, Prime Minister's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed the journalists. Issues related to migration including Rohingya and climate change were seriously discussed in the meeting.

The Prime Minister said, "A large number of forcibly displaced Rohingya refugees from Myanmar is a big burden for Bangladesh and the number is increasing every day as new children are born."

The leader of the EU delegation, Ylva Johansson, said that the EU will continue to support Bangladesh on the Rohingya issue.

She also said that the EU is currently sheltering 4.5 million Ukrainian refugees. In the meeting, the issue of Bangladeshi migrants risking their lives to cross the Mediterranean Sea was also discussed.

The Prime Minister said that Bangladesh is making all efforts to stop this migration.

The EU leader said EU leaders and legal migrants can ensure the welfare of both by creating mutually beneficial conditions.

At this time, the EU delegation wants to know how Bangladesh is dealing with the adverse effects of climate change. In response, Sheikh Hasina said, since Bangladesh has adopted various adaptation and mitigation programs with its own funding, we are capable of dealing with any type of disaster.

The Prime Minister expressed his displeasure that the rich countries - which are responsible for global warming, have not given their promised money to the countries most vulnerable to the harmful effects of climate change.

She also said, "Rich countries have not kept their promises. The leader of the EU delegation praised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for the comprehensive development of Bangladesh."

Sheikh Hasina also said that Bangladesh and the EU are going to celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations next year.
