Dhaka, March 29: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed deep grief and sorrow over the death of 24 people, including 13 Bangladeshis, in a bus accident in Ava district of Asir province, Saudi Arabia. In a condolence message on Tuesday, the Prime Minister sought forgiveness for the bereaved souls and expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families.

The Prime Minister instructed the officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Bangladesh Embassy in Saudi Arabia to take all measures to treat the injured Bangladeshi citizens.

According to the Bangladesh Consulate General in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, about 24 people were killed and about 23 injured in a horrific bus accident in Ava district of Saudi Arabia's southwestern Asir province on Monday. The accident took place around 4 pm at Agabat Shar, where most of the passengers were reportedly Bangladeshis.

The bus was carrying Umrah pilgrims to the holy city of Mecca. A bus of Ruba Al Hijaz Transport Company with passengers from different countries including Bangladeshis living in Ava district left for Mecca in the evening.

According to initial reports, the bus lost control, collided with a car and overturned due to a fault in the brake system and caught fire. The passengers could not get off the bus, as a result of which about 24 passengers were killed on the spot, about 650 km from Jeddah.
