PM Hasina condoles death of veteran journalist Hasan Shahriar

Dhaka, April 10: Hasan Shahriar, former president of the National Press Club and former executive editor of the daily Ittefaq, has died (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilahi Raziun). He died of coronavirus at a private hospital in the capital on Saturday (April 10th) morning. He was 76 years old.

Hasan Shahriar was taken to Impulse Hospital in the capital on April 9 at around 1.30 am when he became very ill. He has been suffering from various complex diseases including lung infections for a long time.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed grief over the death of veteran journalist Hasan Shahriar. In a condolence message sent from the Prime Minister's Press Young, it was said that the role of Hasan Shahriar in the journalism of this country will be memorable. The Prime Minister prayed for the forgiveness of the soul of the deceased and conveyed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family members.

Mainul Alam, joint secretary of the National Press Club, said in a press release that Hasan Shahriar was born on April 25, 1944 in Sunamganj. He started journalism for the daily Ittefaq in the 60's. He then studied in Karachi, Pakistan and worked for the daily Dawn. He was a representative of Ittefaq there. He came to Dhaka in the early seventies and started working for the daily Ittefaq. He retired as executive editor in 2008.

Besides Ittefaq, Bangladesh was represented in various newspapers including International Weekly, Newsweek, Arab News and Deccan Herald. Served as International President of the Commonwealth Journalists Association (CJA). He was the President of the National Press Club from 1993-94.
