Dhaka, August 29, 2021: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has inaugurated the runway expansion work to upgrade Cox's Bazar Airport to international standards.

He inaugurated the event by connecting to Cox's Bazar Airport via video conference from Ganobhaban this morning.

The new 10,800-foot runway will be expanded by expanding the runway at the airport through coastal land reclamation, allowing large aircraft such as Boeing 8 and 74 of international flights to land at the airport and facilitate international flights. Once the project is completed, tourists from different countries will be able to come directly to Cox's Bazar.

The project worth Tk 1,056.06 crore is scheduled to be completed in May 2024, but it will be completed earlier and the project will be implemented with its own funds.

On November 4, 2016, the government approved the project. CAAB signed an agreement on the project with the Changjiang Ichang Waterway Engineering Bureau (CYWEB) of China and China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) on February 9 this year.

CAAB officials said detailed design and construction of temporary installations like site office, road network and jetty have been completed and the main construction work of the project will start after laying the foundation stone of the PM.

At a press briefing at Cox's Bazar Airport on Saturday afternoon, the chairman of the private aviation authority, Air Vice Marshal. Mofidur Rahman said that once the project is completed, Cox's Bazar Airport will be one of the most scenic airports in the world and it will be the longest runway in the country.

According to Bangladesh Civil Aviation Authority sources, the Prime Minister inaugurated the take-off and landing of Boeing 737-800 aircraft at Cox's Bazar Airport on May 8, 2016. He then instructed to expand the runway of the airport to operate international flights.
