Dhaka, June 28: Many roads have been cut off to keep the water flowing during the catastrophic floods in Sylhet-Sunamganj. Besides, some roads have been destroyed in the floods. New flyovers, culverts or bridges will have to be constructed on the roads broken and cut by the floods. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has instructed that new roads cannot be built in these places.

She gave the directive at a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC). The ECNEC meeting, held at the NEC Conference Center in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on Tuesday (June 26), was presided over by the Prime Minister and ECNEC Chairperson Sheikh Hasina virtually from Ganobhaban.

Highlighting the Prime Minister's order at a press conference after the meeting, Planning Minister MA Mannan said many roads in Sylhet, Sunamganj, Netrokona and Moulvibazar had been cut off by the floods. Also some roads are broken. Therefore, new roads cannot be constructed in place of these roads. The Prime Minister has directed to build bridges, flyovers or culverts in these places.

He added that there has been a terrible flood in Sunamganj. The road and bridge is broken. The Prime Minister has asked for bridges or culverts, not roads, in haor or floodplain areas. The movement of water should not be obstructed.

A new project will be taken up for rehabilitation in Sylhet area, the minister said. Many areas have been damaged so special projects will be taken up for rehabilitation. ECNEC will be brought to the meeting. The Prime Minister said to find out where the overpass or underpass is needed. She instructed to build a bridge, not a culvert on the navigable route.
