Dhaka, October 6: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's steps taken to tackle climate change and the Rohingya issue are commendable, said Nathalie Chuard, Switzerland's Ambassador to Bangladesh. Recalling the continuation of strong diplomatic relations with Bangladesh, she lauded the current situation in Bangladesh in establishing human rights, prevention of violence against women, right to information and freedom of speech. The ambassador made the remarks during a meeting with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury at her Parliament House office here on Tuesday (September 5).

During the meeting, they discussed economic development and expansion of trade and commerce, climate issues, Rohingya issue, women's empowerment, and the upcoming pre-COP conference. The Speaker assured full cooperation when the diplomat proposed the Parliament House as a venue for the implementation of the 'Gender Based Violence Prevention Campaign 2021'.

The Speaker said, “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, we have made tremendous progress in every field. She was recently awarded the SDG Progress Award at the UN General Assembly. The Prime Minister has set a unique example in the empowerment of women at the local grassroots level, starting from the Member of Parliament. The government is working relentlessly to bring the people of the country under the corona vaccine."

The Speaker said, “Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has recently put forward a six-point proposal for overall human development in her address to the UN General Assembly, which is very timely. Although the government has succeeded in establishing the right to information and freedom of speech, misinformation and fake news spread using social media is hinder the efforts. Curbing it will take concerted effort by all."

She also mentioned that the participation of the parliamentary delegation in the upcoming pre-COP conference to be held in Rome, Italy will be an important contribution.

Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury sought Switzerland's continued support for Bangladesh's economic development and expansion of trade and commerce. The Ambassador hoped that the cooperation between the two countries would continue on issues of mutual interest.
