Dhaka, September 13: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has urged everyone to save electricity as much as possible.

"Don't keep the lights on unnecessarily because you pay the bill. We charge you less than the production cost, while providing a lot of subsidy. If you follow the order, another poor person will get the much needed electricity, it must be remembered," she said.

The Prime Minister said this while inaugurating five completed power plants on Sunday (September 12). She was virtually connected from Ganobhaban. The programme was organized at Bidyut Bhaban.

"Those who use electricity have to be economical. Many people in the country have now become rich and wealthy. But keep in mind that the electricity we are producing costs a lot more," she said.

"I would request everyone to be a little aware of the use of electricity. When there is no work at hand, you turn off the power switches yourself. The bill will be less, you will have to pay less. We will also save electricity. We will request everyone a little about that," she added.

"If you are not economical in using electricity, how much more can we subsidize? That must be seen. That is why we would urge everyone to be frugal in using electricity," the Prime Minister said.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina herself does not use electricity unnecessarily. She said, "When I go out, I turn off the switches myself, wherever I feel that electricity is not needed here."

"I know Ganobhaban is a government property. The rule of those who work here is to keep everything on. But, the more I live in the place, the more I save, the more I keep the habit. No one stays Prime Minister forever. It is a five-year tenure. After that you may not stay. Then you have to go on like yourself again. There is no benefit in destroying the habit of saving electricity," she concluded.
