PM makes five proposals to deal with global crises

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, May 24: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has made five proposals to strengthen economic cooperation in tackling the regional crisis in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

She made the proposal in a video message aired on Monday (May 23) at the 78th session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). The online session will be held in a hybrid system from May 23 to 27 at the United Nations Conference Center in Bangkok on the occation of the 75th anniversary of ESCAP.

In a video message, the Prime Minister said that Ukraine-Russia war must be stopped immediately and joint steps must be taken to deal with the situation. ESCAP may consider the proposals I have made. In the proposal, she suggested taking effective steps for cooperation in knowledge and innovation and creation of adequate funds in countries affected by climate change.

Besides, the Prime Minister spoke about job creation and expansion of information technology, which will help everyone to adapt to the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

She said that while the world was desperate to survive the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine conflict posed a serious threat to the global economy and social stability. As a result, poor and developing countries are facing severe losses.

Highlighting the aims and objectives of the government, the Prime Minister said her government is working towards the goal of making Bangladesh a developed and prosperous country by 2041. She said that her government is working relentlessly to build a hunger and poverty free Bangladesh, which is the main theme of SDG-1 and 2.

Noting that the Covid-19 pandemic has damaged the health systems and economies of most countries in the world, Sheikh Hasina said her government has tried to balance life and livelihood in tackling the pandemic.

"Although many countries in South Asia have achieved negative or nominal GDP growth during the pandemic, Bangladesh has maintained a commendable growth during this time," she said.

The Prime Minister also sought the active support of the international community for the safe, sustainable and dignified return of the 11 lakh displaced Rohingya refugees.
