Own Correspondent, Dhaka, July 19: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will hand over 26,229 more houses to the landless and homeless on Thursday (July 21) under the third phase of the government's Ashrayan-2 project as part of ensuring housing system for the landless and homeless people.

Prime Minister's Principal Secretary Dr. Ahmad Kaykaus told reporters during a press briefing at the Prime Minister's office on Monday, "Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will hand over house documents and keys to these homeless and landless people virtually on Thursday."

He added that the Prime Minister will be connected virtually with five places in five districts from Ganobhaban.

The places are - Charkalakopa shelter project under Ramgati upazila of Lakshmipur district, Gaurambha shelter project under Rampal upazila of Bagerhat district, Char Bheramara shelter project under Nandale upazila of Mymensingh district, Mahanpara shelter project under Panchagarh Sadar upazila of Panchagarh district and Jangalia shelter project under Mohammadpur upazila of Magura district.

Ahmad Kaykaus said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will declare 52 upazilas including all the upazilas of Panchagarh and Magura districts as homeless and landless upazilas.

He also said that a total of 67,800 houses are being provided nationwide in the third phase of Asharyan-2 project. Out of these 67,800 houses, 32,904 houses have been handed over on April 26, 2022 and the remaining 8,667 houses are under construction. Under the project, 1,85,129 houses have been allotted till 2021-2022.

In the first phase on January 23, 2021, 63,999 homeless and landless families got a roof over their heads, and on June 20 last year, 53,330 families got houses in the second phase of the Ashrayan project.

In the third phase of Ashrayan-2 project, the government changed the design of the houses to make them more sustainable and climate tolerant. This increases the construction cost of the houses, and that is why now the homeless and landless people will get better quality tin-shed semi-furnished houses on two percent land.
