Dhaka, Feb 27: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that as a result of taking and implementing timely initiatives of the government, the police have become a modern, efficient, dynamic and people-friendly force.

The Prime Minister said this in a message on the occasion of 'Police Week 2024' which started from Tuesday.

She said that the Bangladesh Police Force was the force that the father of the nation gave special importance to in the reconstruction and development of the war-torn Bangladesh after independence, i.e. maintaining law and order, providing security for people's lives and property, and preventing and suppressing crime. Whenever the Awami League formed the government, it followed the footsteps of the father of the nation and developed the Bangladesh Police.

The Prime Minister said, "During the 1996-2001 period, we increased the police budget, introduced risk allowance, doubled the rate of ration and provided necessary vehicles. In 1998, we were the first to appoint a woman officer to the post of Superintendent of Police."

"With the seed money of Tk 5 crore, we have taken multifaceted steps including formation of police welfare trust, establishment of police staff college, increase of police manpower and infrastructure development. As a result of taking and implementing these timely initiatives, the police force today has become a modern, up-to-date, efficient, dynamic and people-friendly force," she added.

Sheikh Hasina said, "In the last 15 years, we have implemented comprehensive development activities. The number of Grade-I and Grade-II posts has also been increased, including promotion, creation of new posts and a large number of promotions at various levels. We have established many new specialized police units including Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), Industrial Police, Tourist Police, Anti-Terrorism, Counter-Terrorism, Naval Police, MRT Police and SPBN."
