Dhaka, April 26: Hefazat leader Maulana Mamunul Haque has direct links with a Pakistani militant group, said Harun Ar Rashid, deputy commissioner of police in the Tejgaon division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). Rashid made the remarks at a press conference at his office on Sunday. Mamunul Haque has been remanded for seven days in a case of Mohammadpur police station. After questioning in the case, the police said that they got the information.

Haroon Ar Rashid said that Mamunul was involved in various conspiracies, including overthrowing the government by setting up an organization in the country on the model of Pakistani militant organization.

Mentioning that he wanted to use Hefazat as a stepping stone for political gain, the police official said that Mamunul was trying to gain political advantage by using the students of Qawmi Madrasa. He could not give a clear explanation about many things starting from going to Shapla Chattar in 2013 on remand. Besides, Mamunul could not give a clear explanation about various statements.

Mamunul own brother-in-law is Maulana Mufti Muhammad Neyamtullah. He was in Pakistan for about 14-15 years. He later came to Bangladesh and joined Jamia Rahmania Madrasa as a teacher. Then Mamunul Haque got his sister married to Neyamtullah.

Neyamtullah was close to Taj, one of the accused in the August 21 grenade attack. Neyamtullah was also arrested in connection with the attack. But Mamunul Haque's father Shaikhul Hadis Azizul Haque freed his son-in-law by exerting influence as he was a partner in the BNP-led alliance.

Neyatullah and Mamunul Haque were in Pakistan together for more than 40-45 days in 2005. From there he brought a religious organization as a model and brought together people of different ideologies in Bangladesh. Money from abroad is used by the organization to overthrow the government.

Mamunul Haque had contacts with Jamaat's secret agents and the accused in the grenade attack. He used Hefazat as a stepping stone in Bangladesh by bringing a model of an organization based in Pakistan through Pakistani intelligence agencies. Harun also said that Mamunul used Qawmi students.

Rashid said, "We spoke to him for seven days. His mobile phone was recovered. A lot of information was obtained through his mobile phone. Mamunul Haque brought crores of takas from Dubai, Qatar and Pakistan. He brought money in the name of Babri Masjid in India."

The money was brought in using anti-India sentiments. With this money, he has managed some people in different mosques and Qawmi madrassas across the country, the police said.
