Baitul Mukarram: Police lathicharge people protesting installation of sculptures

Dhaka, December 5: Police resorted to lathicharge those protesting the installation of sculptures, outside the Baitul Mukarram mosque after Friday prayers.

After the prayers, the protesters started chanting slogans while standing on the stairs of the north gate of Baitul Mukarram. At that time, they chanted slogans like 'We want to fight, We want to fight and live', 'Muslims of the world, unite'.

At this time the police told them to leave. After chanting slogans for about half an hour, the protesters went away.

Later at around 2 pm they came out through the north gate and came towards Vijayanagar. Protesters gathered at the police resorted to baton charge to disperse them when they tried to.

Several people were injured. One person has also been arrested. However, the police did not accept the arrest.

Motijheel Zone ADC Enamul Haque Mithu told reporters, "Any meeting without permission has been banned. Even then, after the prayers, some people stood up to protest. We told them to move. Later, when we tried to go towards Shahbag junction, we dispersed them. They tried to break the barricade and go to Shahbag. We could not identify them as they did not bring any banner."
