Police officer killed in car accident while returning with accused

Dhaka, May 21: A police officer was killed after losing control of his vehicle at Rajnagar in Moulvibazar. Four policemen and three accused were injured in the incident. The accident took place at Mahasahasra in Rajnagar on Saturday (May 21) morning.

The deceased has been identified as Rajnagar police sub-inspector (SI) Samiran Chandra Das, 40. His house is in Panchpariya village of Habiganj Sadar police station.

According to police and local sources, SI Samiran, Shawkat Masud Bhuiyan, Soleiman Ahmed, ASI Jahangir Alam, Constable Masud Mia and Constable Aziz Hossain were returning to the police station in a police pickup van. On the way, their pickup lost control and collided with a tree at Mahasahasra on Moulvibazar-Fenchuganj road.

Local and fire service members rescued them and sent them to a 250-bed hospital in Moulvibazar. The on-duty doctor later declared SI Samiran Chandra Das dead. At the same time, SI Shatakat Masud Bhuiyan, Constable Masud Mia and Constable Aziz Hossain were sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital as their condition was critical.

Moulvibazar Superintendent of Police Mohammad Zakaria said the policemen were returning to the police station with the accused after completing their duties. As the road was slippery due to rain, the vehicle lost control and one police SI was killed and four policemen and three accused were injured.
