Dhaka, November 30: A police shootout resulted in the deaths of two people, who were suspects in the murder of Comilla City councilor Syed Md Sohel and another local political leader.

The deceased have been identified as Sabbir Hossain, 28, and Sajan, 32.

They were among the 21 people named by Sohel's family in their complaint.

The shootout took place in the early hours of Tuesday, Dhaka Tribune quoted OC Anwarul Azim of the Comilla Kotwali Model Police Station as saying.

Earlier, on November 22, several masked assailants barged into the office of Councillor Syed Md Sohel- located in Pathriapara- and opened fire, killing the latter and Haripad Saha, president of the Sramik League’s local committee.

Sohel was also the president of the local Awami League unit.

Speaking about the shootout, OC Azim told Dhaka Tribune: "Several teams of the Kotwali police and the Detective Branch raided the Sangraish and Nabagram area early on Tuesday following a tip-off."

The cop said that a group of people opened fire as soon as they saw police near the Gomti River embankment in Songraish, forcing law enforcement officials to retaliate.

After the attackers fled the spot, police found two people with bullet wounds. They were then rushed to the Comilla Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared them dead.

The cop said that three law enforcers sustained injuries during the shootout. He added that two firearms and ammunition were recovered from the shootout site.
