Dhaka, May 19: Bangladesh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun said that the law and order forces will perform their duties as per the instructions of the Election Commission during the national elections.

He said this to reporters at the end of a meeting with the Election Commission (EC) on the occasion of the upcoming five City Corporation elections on Thursday.

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal denied allegations of police being influenced by local candidates in the elections. The EC held a meeting with the members of law and order forces and senior government officials on the occasion of Gazipur, Khulna, Barisal, Rajshahi and Chittagong City Corporation elections. In this meeting held at the Agargaon election building, the senior secretary of the public security department, the secretaries of some related ministries, police chief, BGB, RAB. Representatives of various agencies of the government including DGFI, NSI participated.

On the question of the national election, he said that the issue of the national parliament election has come up. During the national elections we will be under the Election Commission. I will carry out my duties in the light of the instructions given by the EC.

He said, in the meeting, the scheduled 5 city corporation elections were discussed. The Election Commission has directed us to conduct free, fair and impartial elections. Information taken from all agencies. Requested our cooperation. We have assured to cooperate and fulfill the duties as per the instructions of the Election Commission.

The IGP said on the issue of illegal arms recovery based on the elections, according to the circular of the Election Commission, we will take the necessary actions for free and fair elections, including the recovery of arms, action against terrorists. In this case, our local unit is working in constant communication with the returning officer.

"I don't think so," the police chief denied the CEC's claim that sometimes the police are biased by local candidates. As per the law, we have been fulfilling the duty of election for a long time. Each and every member of Bangladesh Police is performing their duties properly for free, fair and impartial elections.
