Dhaka, July 26: In the light of the growing power demand in the country, as the established production capacity has increased over time, so has the maximum production. The highest generation in the fiscal year 1970-71 was 225 MW which has increased to 13,793 MW as on July 18, 2021.

On June 6, 2009, the power generation capacity was only 3,268 MW. Besides, 96.2 percent households are currently covered by electricity facility.

"My own opinion is that if you have to single out Sheikh Hasina developments, then electricity comes first. There is no way anyone can deny it. We need electricity in our life. Just as food is needed in life, so is electricity in development. Another name for electricity is energy. The power sector is moving forward as a result of the far-reaching plans of the present government. Power generation will increase further in the future. One hundred percent people will get electricity," Planning Minister MA Mannan said.

According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics of the Ministry of Planning, the net electricity generation in the 2018-19 fiscal year was 70,533 million kilowatt hours. Of this, 35,107 million kilowatt-hours of electricity was generated in the public sector, 28,640 million kilowatt-hours in the private sector and 6,786 million kilowatt-hours of electricity was imported from neighboring India. Of the total, 49.8 per cent of the net production was imported from the public sector, 40.6 per cent from the private sector and 9.6 per cent from neighboring countries.

The lion's share of the country's total electricity generation is dependent on natural gas. According to the 2018-19 fiscal year, the net electricity generation in the country, including imports, was 70,533 gigawatt-hours, of which about 68.49 percent was used as natural gas fuel.

In the 2016-17 financial year, 211 billion cubic feet of natural gas was used in the country's public sector power plants. Coal was first used as fuel in 2005-06. In the 2016-17 financial year, the use of coal for power generation stood at 8,25,000 tons. The amount of furnace oil and diesel used in the power sector in the public sector in the 2016-17 financial year was 615 and 795 million liters respectively.
