President and PM mourn death of former Deputy Speaker Shawkat Ali

Dhaka, November 16: President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have expressed deep grief over the death of former Deputy Speaker of Parliament and freedom fighter Colonel (retd) Shawkat Ali.

President Md. Abdul Hamid in a condolence message today said that the late Shawkat Ali has worked for the development of the spirit of independence and liberation war from his life time.

The courageous role he has played for the freedom of the motherland at the risk of his life despite being a military officer is unparalleled.

The President said that in his death, the country lost a great heroic freedom fighter, freedom fighter and social worker. The nation will remember the contribution of the late Shawkat Ali with respect.

In a condolence message sent from the Press Wing of the Prime Minister's Office on Monday, Sheikh Hasina said Shawkat Ali was made the 26th accused in the 1969 state vs. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Agartala conspiracy case by the then West Pakistani ruling class and recalled with great respect the historic events of his joint imprisonment with Bangabandhu. .

Sheikh Hasina said the nation will always remember Shawkat Ali's contribution to Bangladesh's freedom struggle, great liberation war and strengthening of parliamentary democracy. The country lost an old public leader, I lost a loyal colleague of Bangabandhu's ideology.

The Prime Minister prayed for the forgiveness of the soul of the deceased and conveyed her deepest condolences to the bereaved family members.

In a separate condolence message, Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury expressed deep grief over the death of Shawkat Ali.

Besides, Deputy Speaker Fazle Rabbi Mia and Chief Whip Nur-e-Alam Chowdhury expressed deep grief and sorrow.
