President calls for consensus through discussion

Dhaka, April 8: President Md. Abdul Hamid said that the 12th National Assembly election is imminent. Election is the only way to get power or bring about change. Politics of terror and violence in the name of movement can never be beneficial for the country, society and economy. Rather, it makes the political environment chaotic.

He said that we should all help democracy to develop by forgetting conflict and coming to consensus through dialogue. Contribute to the establishment of a tolerant democratic system by removing violence from politics. It is everyone's hope that the people of Bangladesh will impartially exercise their right to vote in the light of the established democratic norms and the great constitution, and the history of democracy will be enriched and accelerated in Bangladesh.

The President said this in a speech delivered to Parliament on Friday (March 7) on the occasion of 50 years of National Parliament. Prime Minister and Leader of Parliament Sheikh Hasina, Leader of Opposition Begum Roshan Ershad and most of the members of Parliament were present at the time.

Abdul Hamid said that development and democracy go together. If democracy continues in the country, development and progress will proceed. Again, if the normal course of democracy is blocked, development is also hindered. In order to make development permanent and sustainable, democracy must be strengthened institutionally, the practice of democracy must be spread at the grassroots level. The development that takes place without democracy can never be universal. That development is individual and group oriented.

He said, National Parliament is the main focus of institutionalization of democracy. In view of this, the people expect that the Parliament will play an effective role in solving the urgent and important problems of daily civic life and sensitivity to the needs of the people. The National Parliament has to coordinate the demands and interests of citizens of all levels of society, various groups, parties, organizations in a democratic manner. Members of Parliament are elected representatives of the people. The people have elected you with a lot of hope so that you present their words, demands, hopes and aspirations in the Parliament. It is your responsibility and duty.

He said, there may be political differences and differences in ideologies. But there can be no difference in making Parliament the focal point of democracy and development. So my urgent appeal to you is to unite to make Parliament effective. One of our challenges is to ensure the participation of people at all levels in the National Assembly. We should always strive to achieve this.
