Dhaka, March 17: Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has arrived in Dhaka on a three-day official visit to attend the first day of a ten-day event marking the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the golden jubilee of independence.

An Emirates Airlines flight carrying the Maldivian head of state arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 8.30 am on Wednesday.

He was given a red carpet reception at the airport.

President's Press Secretary Joynal Abedin said President Md. Abdul Hamid welcomed the Maldivian Head of State and his wife. The President's wife Rashida Khanam was also with him at the time.

Although it is customary to greet with flowers, it is not due to the coronavirus epidemic. The two heads of state did not shake hands. He was the first world leader to visit Bangladesh to attend the golden jubilee of independence and the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu.

Ibrahim Salih was greeted with 21 rounds of artillery at the airport's VVIP terminal and taken to the ranks of dignitaries. A well-equipped team of three forces awarded him the Guard of Honor. After inspecting the guard, President Hamid introduced the President of Maldives to dignitaries.

Shortly after arriving in Bangladesh, the Maldivian President visited the National Memorial in Savar. There he paid homage to the heroic martyrs of the war of independence with flowers.

After paying his respects, he signed the mourning book kept at the memorial. He then planted a sapling of a ‘Bakul’ tree in the premises of the memorial.

The President of Maldives later paid homage to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in Dhaka.

Later, the President of Maldives visited Bangabandhu's house (now Bangabandhu Memorial Museum). Bangabandhu's youngest daughter Sheikh Rehana was present at the time.

The Maldivian president is accompanied by his wife Fazna Ahmed, Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid and a 27-member delegation, including the Minister for Economic Development and other senior officials.
