Own Correspondent, Dhaka, January 17: President Md. Abdul Hamid has called upon the people to be vigilant so that no one can ruin the stability of the country in the name of religion. At the same time, he called upon the members of parliament to put the public interest above all else. The President also asked the government to take necessary measures, including precaution, so that the new variant of Corona, Omicron, does not spread.

The President said this in his address to the National Assembly on Sunday. The session started at 4 pm with Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury in the chair. Leader of Parliament and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was present in the session. At the beginning of each year, on the first day of the session, important persons including ambassadors of different countries are invited. However, this time it was not possible because of the pandemic.

At the request of the Speaker, the President began reading out the summary of his written speech. Abdul Hamid requested Speaker Shirin Sharmin to consider his keynote address as read. He spoke on the dias placed next to the speaker's seat. Like every time, the President read out the summary of the 169-page speech fixed by the cabinet. He started his speech at 4:25 pm and finished it at 5:15 pm.

The President said, "Bangladesh is a unique example to the world in terms of communal harmony. The government is trying to ensure that people from all communities of the country can practice their religion in harmony. Religious festivals of all communities including Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and Christians are being celebrated peacefully in a solemn and festive atmosphere. However, we must be vigilant so that no conspiratorial group can destabilize the country in the name of religion."

Praising the Prime Minister, Abdul Hamid said, "Under the leadership of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the greatest father of the nation of all time, the nation has achieved an independent and sovereign Bangladesh. His continued struggle for the rights of the people, his fearless and far-sighted leadership and his deep patriotism are recognized nationally and internationally. Today, under the leadership of his worthy successor, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the Bengali nation is moving forward on the path of building a happy and prosperous golden Bengal, the lifelong cherished dream of Bangabandhu."

Calling on all to take initiative in establishing democracy and rule of law irrespective of party affiliation, Abdul Hamid said, "It is our sacred duty to give the gift of safe, happy, beautiful and prosperous Bangladesh to the new generation. To this end, we strongly urge our people to take concerted action on fundamental issues like democracy, rule of law and development, irrespective of party affiliation, class and profession."
