Prime Minister calls upon the rich to stand by the poor

Dhaka, January 16: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina called upon the rich of the society to stand by the poor, destitute and helpless, saying that her government is working to ensure housing for every landless and homeless person.

She said this when a delegation of the Bangladesh Association of Banks (BAB) came to meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her office on Sunday.

Sheikh Hasina said, "Not a single person will be landless or addressless in Bangladesh. This is our goal."

After the meeting, Prime Minister's Deputy Press Secretary KM Shakhawat Moon briefed the journalists. He said that 36 banks have given a total grant of Tk 113.25 crore for the construction of houses for the homeless and landless people under the Ashrayan project.

Calling on the wealthy class of society to come forward to build houses for the country's homeless and landless, Sheikh Hasina said, "Not only the government, but we all will take the country forward on the path of development."

She also said that the quality of life of many homeless and landless people has changed after getting land and houses. Most of them have already been given land and houses. Now there are only a few left. Housing is also being constructed for them.

The Prime Minister said, "There can be no greater achievement than the smile on the face and satisfaction of the heart of those who got a house from this shelter project."

She also said that many who have got two decimal land under Ashrayan scheme - they have developed vegetable cultivation, poultry farming, cottage industries and shops there. They have found a way to survive well this way. As a result of getting this land and house, their lifestyle is changing (improving).

Thanking BAB and bankers for providing the grant money, the Prime Minister said, "I don't need to tell you (about the grant payment). You come forward spontaneously in any disaster and crisis."
