Dhaka, November 2: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called upon the developed countries to set national standards for reducing carbon emissions. She said developed countries must report their nationally determined contributions (NDCs), as well as reducing national carbon emissions and adapting to the effects of climate change. She was speaking at the Conference of the Parties (COP 26) conference on Monday. SHe made four proposals during her national statement at the 26th session of the conference.

On reducing carbon emissions, the Prime Minister said the Bangladesh government has taken various measures, including updating the country's NDC, canceling 10 coal-fired power plants with USD 12 billion in foreign investment and taking 40 per cent of energy from renewable sources by 2041. About 200 countries are taking part in the COP26 and countries are being asked to submit their NDCs (plans), which were the main subject of the Paris Agreement on reducing emissions.

Raising the second proposal, Sheikh Hasina, President of Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) and V20 (The Vulnerable 20), said developed countries should fulfill their commitment to provide USD 100 billion annually with a 50 to 50 balance between adaptation and mitigation.

In the third proposal, he said developed countries should spread clean and green technology to the most vulnerable countries at affordable prices and also consider the development needs of CVF countries.

In her fourth and final resolution, the Prime Minister said that the issue of rising sea level, increasing salinity, river erosion, floods and droughts must be addressed, including the sharing of global responsibilities for migrants displaced by climate change. He said Bangladesh is one of the climate-risk prone countries despite contributing less than 47 percent of global emissions. To address this challenge, the Bangladesh Climate Change Trust Fund was established in 2009. We've doubled our climate spending in the last seven years.

Referring to the steps taken by her government to tackle climate change, Sheikh Hasina said, "We are currently preparing a national adaptation plan. We recently submitted an ambitious and up-to-date NDC."

The Prime Minister said Bangladesh has one of the most extensive solar energy activities in the world. "We expect to have 40 percent of our energy from renewable sources by 2041. We have canceled 10 coal-fired power plants worth USD 12 billion."
