Own Correspondent, Dhaka, 4 December 2023: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina called for the protection of rivers to save the country and directed to stop river pollution. She gave this order at a meeting on policy decisions regarding the adoption of related projects in the light of the master plan designed to prevent pollution and protect the navigability of the rivers around Dhaka at the Prime Minister's office on Monday.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, "Just as our body has veins and veins for blood circulation, so is the river for our Bangladesh. The survival of our country also depends on this river."

She said, "Bangladesh needs the flowing river to sustain. The blood flowing through the veins saves our body, and this water and river saves Bangladesh. We must always remember this."

Pointing out the various measures taken by the government to stop river pollution-encroachment and restore navigability in the past years, the Prime Minister said, "After we came to the government, one of our efforts was always how to protect the rivers, how to restore navigability."

She said, "At one time, the waterways of Bangladesh were the only means of transporting goods, the only place. Those waterways have gradually come to a place where there are no rivers in many places."

Sheikh Hasina said that there was a time when the issue of maintaining the navigability of the river was not given importance. Wasn't looking to do it."

Stating that the unplanned low bridge has created an obstacle to the navigation, the Prime Minister said that not only here, but all over Bangladesh, how many bridges were built by the local government, the bridges were very beneficial to the people, but when the bridges were built, it was not kept in mind that they would affect the navigation. For which now there is a problem. These bridges are an obstacle."

Directing the planned development of other cities outside the capital, the Prime Minister said, "Plans should be taken now for other cities outside Dhaka. Whatever plan we do, there should be waste management, water flow. Rivers should be dredged and rivers should be restored to navigability."
