Dhaka, Ocotber 22: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said Bangladesh is a non-communal democratic country. In this country, citizens of all religions have to show respect to other religions. She also advised her party leaders and workers to increase work to maintain communal harmony as well as hold peace conventions, peace processions and peace meetings.

Sheikh Hasina said, "Communal harmony must be maintained. We have to increase the surveillance in every area and hold peace gatherings, peace processions, peace meetings. Measures should be taken for communal harmony so that no conflict arises, because, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Christians can all live together in this land."

The Prime Minister said this while addressing the inaugural function of the newly constructed 'Office Building' of Comilla Awami League on Thursday afternoon. She participated in the event virtually through video conference from Ganobhaban.

The head of government said, "If people die, these resources will be of no use. Therefore, we must help the poor as much as we, that is the teaching of the father of the nation and Islam. And the Awami League has been established to serve the people, it must be remembered. Every leader and activist of the Awami League must follow the ideals of the father of the nation."

Mentioning that her government has made houses for Bede people, third gender and even leprosy patients in the country, the Prime Minister said, "The way I see people as human beings, the leaders and workers of Awami League also have to see people as human beings and serve them. The country gained independence after all people, irrespective of religion and caste, took up arms and responded to the call of the Father of the nation. So this freedom cannot be allowed to fail in any way."

He said, "What happened in Comilla is really very sad. Because the teaching of Islam is to respect humans. But just as everyone has the right to practice their own religion, no one can despise the religion of others. Islam does not teach that. And along with respecting one's own religion, one has to respect the religion of others. And if other religions are despised, one's own religion is disrespected."

Sheikh Hasina said, "If we analyze the incident in Comilla, we will see that that someone disrespected our holy Quran while trying to disrespect other's religion. This is very sad thing."
