Dhaka, November 2: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called for finding a realistic and inclusive solution to tackle climate change. She said climate change is now a global and cross-border issue and no country is immune from its terrible consequences.

Sheikh Hasina made the call in her keynote address at the CVF-Commonwealth High Level Panel on Climate Prosperity Partnership on the sidelines of the COP26 conference in Glasgow, Scotland on Monday (November 1).

She called on the Commonwealth and the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) to work together to save the world from the dire consequences of climate change through the implementation of the Paris Agreement.

Sheikh Hasina, President of CVF, an organization of countries affected by climate change, said that climate disasters are on the rise. Its impact has brought climate-affected countries to the brink of irreversible damage. Natural disasters are affecting global food, energy, health and economic security.

Referring to the recently released report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in this regard, Sheikh Hasina said the IPCC report has sent a clear warning that we must take urgent and decisive steps to save the world and future generations.

The IPCC report said that as global temperatures rise, human civilization is approaching the ultimate danger. People are fully responsible for this. In the next two decades, global temperatures could rise by 1.5 degrees Celsius over pre-industrial times. As a result of rising temperatures, sea levels are expected to rise by two meters by the end of this century. The coastal lowlands will face dire consequences for sea level rise.

The report goes on to say that climate change due to greenhouse gas emissions can no longer be stopped. In the report, UN scientists said that various activities harmful to the environment and rising temperatures are a 'red alert' for mankind.

Noting that the countries most at risk are the ones most affected by climate change, the Prime Minister said the 48 countries that are members of the Climate Vulnerable Forum are responsible for only 5 per cent of carbon emissions. But the adverse effects of climate change have posed a fundamental threat to our lives and livelihoods.
