Dhaka, March 25: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called upon political leaders and policy makers to work together to build a peaceful and prosperous South Asia.

"If we work together for the betterment of our people, South Asia will surely be established as one of the most prosperous regions in the world. We have this belief," she said.

Speaking at the National Parade Square on the occasion of the eighth day of the ten-day event marking the birth centenary of Bangabandhu and the golden jubilee of independence on Wednesday, the Prime Minister said, "We can easily improve the lot of the people of South Asia by utilizing the resources acquired through mutual cooperation."

She said, "South Asia is home to about a quarter of the world's population. The region has as many problems as it has potential.

The Prime Minister of Bhutan Dr. Lotay Tshering was present as the invited guest.

Bangabandhu's youngest daughter and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's younger sister, Sheikh Rehana, was also present on the occasion as an invited guest.

Video messages from Pope Francis and Sonia Gandhi, President of the Indian National Congress, were broadcast on the occasion.

The Prime Minister of Bhutan is the fourth world leader to attend the celebrations.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Bhutan and Bangladesh, Prime Minister Lotay Tshering handed over a commemorative postage stamp to Sheikh Hasina.

The Prime Minister said, "Bhutan is a very close neighbor of ours. Apart from its geographical proximity, we have almost the same history and heritage. Our position on various international and regional issues is almost the same. The relationship between the two peoples is very ancient. Born in Bangladesh in the 10th century. Mahasiddha Tilopa, a Buddhist guru, preached Buddhism in Tibet and Bhutan."

Recalling Bhutan's cooperation in the great Liberation War, the Prime Minister said, "In 1971, in our great liberation war, the late His Excellency Jigme Dorji Wangchuk, the third king of Bhutan, and the people of Bhutan not only supported the freedom-loving Bengalis, but extended their helping hand as much as they could. And served the sick Bengali refugees."

The Prime Minister said, "Bhutan is the first country to recognize independent Bangladesh as the first independent-sovereign state. Bhutan formally recognised Bangladesh on December 6, 1971 before its final victory on December 16, 1971."
