Own Correspondent, Dhaka, February 9: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has sought Japan's support for the speedy, voluntary and sustainable repatriation of displaced Rohingyas to Myanmar.

The Prime Minister sought the support in a video message on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh-Japan diplomatic relations.

She said, "We want Japan's support for the speedy, safe and sustainable repatriation of these displaced (Rohingyas) people to their ancestral home in Myanmar. Bangladesh and Japan have always supported each other in the International Forum for World Peace, Progress, Prosperity, Stability and Sustainable Development as trusted partners and peace loving countries."

Sheikh Hasina said the two countries have had excellent relations since the recognition by Japan on February 10, 1972. Japan was among the first few countries to open a residential diplomatic mission in Dhaka. Our people gratefully remember the valuable support and contribution of Japan and its people, especially the school-students, during our liberation war. She said mutual trust, respect, friendship and cooperation are the basis of bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Japan.

On the other hand, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida reiterated Japan's commitment to strengthen bilateral relations with Bangladesh.

He referred to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's visit to Japan in 1973 as a solid foundation in the history of bilateral relations between the two countries. Appreciating the socio-economic progress of Bangladesh under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he reiterated his commitment to stand by Bangladesh for the mutual benefit of the people of the two countries. He assured Japan's continued support in resolving the Rohingya crisis.

On the occasion of the golden jubilee of diplomatic relations, which is observed on Feb 10, the Embassy of Japan in Dhaka and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh jointly organized an event at the Foreign Service Academy on Wednesday. Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen, Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen and Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Ito Naoki spoke on the occasion.
