Dhaka, March 4: The main suspect in the killing of 30 immigration hopefuls, including 26 Bangladeshis, in Libya last year has been arrested. He was arrested on Monday in the town of Gorian, about 100 kilometers southwest of the capital Tripoli, authorities said.

In May 2020, human traffickers shot and killed 26 Bangladeshis and four African migrants in the town of Mizdah, 150 kilometers south of Tripoli.

Thirty eight people including Bangladeshis were crossing inaccessible roads in Libya to go to Europe in search of better livelihood.

Human traffickers were crossing the desert from Benghazi to Tripoli. The traffickers demanded more money if the group was taken hostage by Libyan militias in Mizdah. An enraged African immigrant kills one of the traffickers. In retaliation, traffickers randomly shot and killed 30 people.

The Libyan coalition government's interior ministry said on Monday that one of the main suspects in the killings had been arrested. He is 23 years old. However, his detailed identity was not disclosed. "He has confessed to the crime," the ministry said in a statement.

"The arrest of the main suspect is a major victory," Interior Minister Fathi Bashagha told AFP.
