Prominent archaeologist Padma Shri Dr. Enamul Haque passes away

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, July 11: Eminent Archaeological Professor Dr. Enamul Haque, recipient of the Independence Award, Ekushey Padak and Padma Shri of India, is no more (Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un). He was 85. He died at his home in the capital on Sunday (July 10) afternoon.

Dr. Enamul Haque's colleague (Research Fellow) Saiful Islam said, Dr. Enamul went to bed at noon after supervising all the work of animal sacrifice from the morning of Eid. As he did not wake up from sleep, Haque was rushed to United Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Enamul Haque's body has been kept in the cold storage of Bardem Hospital. When his daughter returns from abroad next Tuesday (July 12), a decision will be taken about the place and time of his burial.

Enamul Haque was born on March 1, 1937 in Bogra. He held a Masters Degree in History and Archeology from Dhaka University and a PhD in South Asian Arts from Oxford University, UK. Enamul Haque joined the then Dhaka Museum in 1962. After the independence of Bangladesh, when the Dhaka Museum was transformed into the Bangladesh National Museum, he joined as the founding director general.

Dr. Enamul Haque was awarded the highest civilian honour, the Freedom Award, in 2020 for his outstanding contribution from his position. Earlier in 2017, he received the Ekushey Padak. He was also awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed deep grief over the death of Prof. Dr. Enamul Haque, eminent archaeologist, historian and art expert and former Director General of Bangladesh National Museum, who was awarded the Independence Medal and Ekushey Medal.

In a condolence message, Sheikh Hasina said Professor Enamul Haque had deep love and deep respect for Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. During the Great War of Liberation, he visited London and New York and played an important role in creating world opinion for the independence of Bangladesh.

Mentioning that she was the founding editor of Dr. Enamul Haque Sahitya Patrika Uttaran while studying at Dhaka University, the Prime Minister said, "His role in introducing Rabindra and Nazrul Jayanti celebrations at the national level including the establishment of Bangladesh National Museum is highly commendable."

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina prayed for the forgiveness of the departed soul and conveyed her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members.
