Dhaka, May 6: After 22 days, public transport was operated on the streets of Dhaka. Public transport has been shut down since April 14 due to a strict lockdown announced by the government to curb the outbreak of coronavirus. At the end of the third consecutive lockdown, transport with half-passenger capacity and increased fares began operating from dawn on Thursday (May 6).

Although public transport has been opened, inter-district buses will not operate now.

A notification was issued by the Cabinet Division on Wednesday (May 5) extending the ban till midnight on May 16. According to the government notification, only district vehicles will be able to move in the district. Inter-district buses as well as passenger trains and boats are closed.

According to the notification, these bans will remain in force till May 16. A decision will be taken later when the situation in coronavirus becomes normal.

The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has issued five instructions for public transport on the road.

These are: Stopping inter-district public transport; In no way carry more than half (50 per cent) of the total number of seats mentioned in the registration certificate of the concerned motor vehicle; Non-collection of additional rent of adjusted rent (60 per cent increase in existing rent); Disinfect the vehicle with disinfectant at the beginning and end of the trip and ensure mandatory wearing of masks and use of hand sanitizer by motorists, other workers and passengers involved in transportation.

Earlier on Wednesday (May 5), Khandaker Enayet Ullah, general secretary of the Dhaka Road Transport Owners Association, said in a statement that public transport would run in all district cities, including the Dhaka metropolis, from Thursday (May 6) morning.
