RAB arrests fugitive death-row war criminal

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, June 4: The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested a fugitive accused Nazrul Islam, who was sentenced to death for crimes against humanity in 1971.

On Friday, the intelligence branch of the RAB headquarters raided the Mohammadpur area of the capital and arrested the person.

ASP ANM Imran Khan, assistant director of the legal and media wing at the RAB headquarters, said Nazrul Islam, a fugitive accused in the 1971 war, has been arrested in connection with a crime against humanity. He was arrested from Mohammadpur in the capital, where he had been hiding.

Commander Khandaker Al Moin, director of the RAB's legal and media wing, said three people were sentenced to death for crimes against humanity, including murder and genocide, during the liberation war.

The three accused are Rezaul Karim Montu, Shahid Mandal and Md. Nazrul Islam. Among them Nazrul Islam was a fugitive. Nazrul committed crimes against humanity in different areas of Naogaon district during the liberation war. They were charged with several counts including murder, illegal detention, torture, kidnapping, looting and arson.

Khandaker Al Moin further said that Nazrul during the War of Liberation in 1971 had carried out attacks in different areas of Paharpur Union of Badalgachhi Police Station of Naogaon, killed several innocent and unarmed freedom fighters and illegally detained, tortured, abducted, looted and set fire to houses

The International Criminal Tribunal earlier sentenced three accused, including former Naogaon district Jamaat chief Rezaul Karim Montu, to death for crimes against humanity during the war of liberation in 1971. The verdict was announced by the International Criminal Tribunal on Tuesday.

Rezaul Karim Montu is a resident of Joypurhat Sadar. The fugitive Nazrul Islam was hiding in Mohammadpur of the capital. Shahid Mandal's house is in Champadal village of Badalgachhi police station in Naogaon.
