RAB arrests fugitive warranted 'war criminal' from Ashulia

Dhaka, May 22: RAB-2 has arrested Md. Azhar Ali Shikdar (68), a war criminal directly involved in crimes against humanity and an accused under the arrest warrant of the International Crimes Tribunal. On Sunday night, he was arrested in Ashulia police station area of Dhaka.

RAB-2 Senior Assistant Director Senior ASP Md. Fazlul Haque confirmed the matter on Monday (May 22) morning.

During the Great Liberation War of 1971, Md. Azhar Ali Shikder and other war criminal Razakar forces members were directly involved in seven cases of crimes against humanity like murder, genocide, rape, illegal detention, torture, kidnapping, looting and arson as an accomplice of the Pakistani invading forces in Bagerhat's Kachua and Moralganj areas. Among these seven incidents, 22 people including two freedom fighters were killed, 40-50 houses were burnt and completely destroyed after being looted, two people were seriously injured due to inhuman torture and four women were detained in Razakar camp for a long time and raped.

It has been alleged that this war criminal committed these crimes against humanity with his accomplices in Kachua and Moralganj upazilas of Bagerhat from May to December 1971 as a notorious Razakar. On July 16, 2016, the International Criminal Tribunal issued an arrest warrant against Azhar Shikder. In continuation of this, war criminal Md Azhar Ali Shikder was arrested in a raid in Ashulia police station area of Dhaka based on secret information.

During interrogation, the arrested accused admitted to be involved in the incident. In the interrogation, more important information was found, which will be verified and such operations of RAB-2 will continue in the future.
