RAB nabs lawmaker Haji Salim's son over naval officer's assault

Dhaka, October 26: RAB has arrested Mohammad Irfan Salim, a councilor of Dhaka South City Corporation's (DSCC) 30th ward and son of Dhaka-7 MP Haji Salim, for assaulting a naval officer.

Lieutenant Colonel Ashiq Billah, a spokesman for the RAB's law and media wing, told reporters at the scene that Irfan was being interrogated and conducted on a number of recent issues, not just yesterday.

Asked why there was a magistrate at the spot, he said, "If you want to carry out an operation somewhere, you have to do it in the presence of a magistrate. That is why the magistrate came to the spot. Details will be announced at the end of the operation."

Earlier, a RAB team searched Haji Salim's house to arrest his son.

After inspecting the spot in the morning, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Ramna Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) Sajjadur Rahman said police were looking for the accused, including Mohammad Irfan Salim.

On Sunday (October 25) night, Wasif Ahmed Khan, a naval officer, was assaulted by Irfan and his men after the latter got out of a government vehicle with Dhaka-7 MP Haji Mohammad Salim's 'Member of Parliament' sticker on it.

Although there was a GD in the incident at night, a case was filed against 7 people, including Haji Salim's son on Monday morning.

The incident took place near Kalabagan signal in the capital.

According to the case statement, after Irfan's car hit Wasif, he stopped the motorcycle on the side of the road and stood in front of the car and introduced himself.

Then the accused started threatning and abusing him.

"They beat me and left me bleeding. Later, my wife, locals and the traffic police officer of Dhanmondi police station rescued me and took me to Anwar Khan Model Hospital. '

A total of five criminal offenses have been mentioned in the case.

The offenses are: criminal use of force against a person as a member of an illegal assembly under section 143 of the Penal Code, illegal control of a person under section 341, injury to obstruct the work of a government official under section 332, force on a government official under section 353 and issuing death threats under section 506.
