Dhaka, November 30: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the government has taken initiative to further expand rail connectivity across the country as part of establishing a strong communication network across Bangladesh to ensure low cost goods and public transport.

"We have plans to make the railways stronger," she said. "We will create a rail network for internal communication across the country. So that there are many benefits to transport goods and people at low cost."

Prime Minister Hasina said this while laying the foundation stone of a separate 4.8 km long 'Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Railway Bridge' over the Jamuna River at a cost of Tk 16,781 crore.

Hasina participated virtually in the main event held at Saidabad in Sirajganj on the west bank of Bangabandhu Bridge via video conference from Ganobhaban on Sunday.

The Prime Minister said, "We want to build a railway network all over Bangladesh. We will take the connect Dhaka to Barisal, Patuakhali and Payrabondor. We have taken the initiative to start his survey. The railway line will run from Dhaka to Chittagong and from there to Cox's Bazar and Teknaf."

"We are implementing a comprehensive program for the development of railways, roads and airways. That will make our country's economy stronger. Moreover, when we are connected with the Trans-Asian Railway, it will also be a huge task for us," she added.

Sheikh Hasina said the Father of the Nation had said that Bangladesh would be the Switzerland of the East. In other words, Bangladesh will be a bridge between East and West. And in order to build that bridge, we have to connect with the Trans-Asian Railway.

The Prime Minister said the railway bridge over the river Teesta had no driving bridge. After she came to the government, she built a separate road bridge there. Otherwise, cars used to cross the railway bridge in a risky manner.

She said one car would have passed over the Bhairab railway line while waiting. There are also separate road bridges. Kalurghat also has a separate road bridge along with a railway bridge.

The head of government said, "In this way, to improve, modernize and diversify the rail communication across Bangladesh, so that it can make a huge contribution to the socio-economic development of the people. We are aiming for that."
