Dhaka, November 14, 2021: Bangladesh Bridge Authority has increased the toll of trains plying on Bangabandhu Bridge.

As a result, Bangladesh Railway will have to pay a toll of one crore rupees per year for running trains on this bridge. Earlier, one had to pay an annual toll of Tk 50 lakh for running trains across Bangabandhu Bridge.

According to the bridge authority, on November 2, the bridge department issued a notification to increase the toll rate by 20-30 percent for the movement of vehicles on Bangabandhu and Muktarpur bridges. Of this, train toll on Bangabandhu Bridge has been increased from Rs 5 million to Rs 1 crore per annum. According to the notification, the new toll rate will be effective soon even if the train runs.

Railway officials say that 44 trains a day travel to the western part of the country through Bangabandhu Bridge. For this he had to pay a toll of 50 lakh rupees a year. According to the new notification, one crore rupees has to be paid. However, Additional Director General (Operations) of Railways Sardar Shahadat Ali said that they have not received any letter from the bridge authorities yet.

Trains run on Bangabandhu Bridge in single line. As a result, the train cannot run at a speed of more than 15-20 kilometers per hour. This wastes a lot of time on the traffic signal to cross the bridge.
Due to increased pressure during Eid or various festivals, the train crashed due to schedule. The government is constructing a separate railway bridge (4.8 km) of new double line. Once the bridge is built, the railway line of Bangabandhu Bridge will be lifted.
